HP to Keep PC Division

27th October 2011

HP today announced that it has completed its evaluation of strategic alternatives for its Personal Systems Group (PSG) and has decided the unit will remain part of the company.

“HP objectively evaluated the strategic, financial and operational impact of spinning off PSG. It’s clear after our analysis that keeping PSG within HP is right for customers and partners, right for shareholders, and right for employees,” said Meg Whitman, HP president and chief executive officer. “HP is committed to PSG, and together we are stronger.”

The strategic review involved subject matter experts from across the businesses and functions. The data-driven evaluation revealed the depth of the integration that has occurred across key operations such as supply chain, IT and procurement. It also detailed the significant extent to which PSG contributes to HP’s solutions portfolio and overall brand value. Finally, it also showed that the cost to recreate these in a standalone company outweighed any benefits of separation.

The outcome of this exercise reaffirms HP’s model and the value for its customers and shareholders. PSG is a key component of HP’s strategy to deliver higher value, lasting relationships with consumers, small- and medium-sized businesses and enterprise customers. The HP board of directors is confident that PSG can drive profitable growth as part of the larger entity and accelerate solutions from other parts of HP’s business.

PSG has a history of innovation and technological leadership as well as an established record of industry-leading profitability. It is the No. 1 manufacturer of personal computers in the world with revenues totaling $40.7 billion for fiscal year 2010.

“As part of HP, PSG will continue to give customers and partners the advantages of product innovation and global scale across the industry’s broadest portfolio of PCs, workstations and more,” said Todd Bradley, executive vice president, Personal Systems Group, HP. “We intend to make the leading PC business in the world even better.”

Sektor update on HP news

30th August 2011

You may have read the recent announcement that HP’s board is evaluating strategic alternatives for the Personal Systems Group business (the rPOS product set falls under this group). Although these may include a range of options, this was not an announcement of a shutdown of the company’s PC business. Rather, HP sees an opportunity to better provide the PSG business with improved flexibility, innovation and responsiveness by considering separating the PSG business from HP’s current portfolio.

We have spoken at length to HP senior leadership team and it is clear that HP remains fully committed to its customers and will continue to deliver innovative products, services and support in Australia, New Zealand and globally.

HP has confirmed that the warranties provided with their PC products (including rPOS) and services will be honored regardless of PSG’s future ownership status. In addition, HP has advised that the announcement did not change its PC and rPOS product roadmaps nor their relationships with their sales, technology and supply chain partners.

HP will continue to make its own statements which customers should refer to, but we wanted to let you know that from Sektor’s perspective it is business as usual. You should feel absolutely comfortable and confident in buying HP, just as you always have, despite the confusion HP’s competitors might be stirring. Sektor remains committed to HP and their products, and we look forward to traveling on this journey with them. If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further please feel free to call your Sektor Account Manager, HP’s PSG team directly or Sektor management.

Sektor and Tech Trans Merger Provides Comprehensive Retail Systems Offering

19th July 2009

Sektor Distributors and Tech Trans have confirmed plans to merge their two organisations. Sektor’s range of retail technology and Tech Trans’ VeriFone EFTPOS terminal range will create the first distributor in New Zealand to offer resellers all components of the technology required in a retail environment.

Sektor’s General Manager Rhys Warren says “This merger creates, for the first time ever in New Zealand, a niche value add technology distributor addressing the complimentary markets of POS, Mobility and EFTPOS”, Warren continues “VeriFone’s leadership position within the payments industry is consistent with Sektor’s approach to only representing leading vendors within each of the market segments it addresses. Similarly Tech Trans has done an exceptional job in consistently being first to market with EFTPOS software, the most recent example being Paymark Version 6.0 and ANZ version 4.8”

Sektor has been in the news recently, having been appointed the exclusive distributor for HP’s new POS terminal offering as well as being appointed Intermec’s New Zealand distributor.

Tech Trans has been the exclusive distributor for VeriFone EFTPOS Terminals in New Zealand for over 10 years. VeriFone is a global leader in the supply of EFTPOS terminals and payments systems internationally selling over 3.5 million terminals a year and is represented in over 100 countries.

Tech Trans’ Stuart Webster said that “Tech Trans’ approach to the payment market is to be innovative and first to market with leading payment solutions. We have been the lead vendor with Paymark for the last two versions of software and are the major supplier to the ANZ network. Tech Trans’ strategy has involved growth in our channels to market and the expansion of our product set. Some examples are the integration of EFTPOS with POS and new technology sectors such as unattended and contactless terminals. The merger with Sektor is the next logical step in our growth strategy. We both have channel centric business models. Together we offer our reseller networks complementary product sets to take to their customers.”

Mark Glass, VeriFone’s GM of Australia and Pacific says “A big part of VeriFone’s international strategy is to assist in the growth of its partner and distributor business models. Accordingly we are very supportive of this merger and the synergies it will deliver to the New Zealand market.”

Management of both organisations welcome the merger as a growth opportunity and are excited about the comprehensive range of systems they can now offer to the New Zealand reseller community.
